Unfortunately, the battery dies just after he works his way through to the lead, but before that watch as David Sugg, then Asa Candler and ultimately Jeff Wright trade the lead and the race! Lots of exciting action and some close, CLOSE racing!

This great proponent of the sport has been racing and owning multiple Sports 2000 cars for over twenty-six years! His one-of-a-kind Chevron B-54 is currently undergoing restoration at Ron Mong’s Elite Fab facility in Ohio, his Apache 87S and his immaculate T-598 pictured above, are ready for the new season!

Greg is hopefully going to attend Summit Point and will definitely be at Lime Rock on Labor Day! He wanted a car that was a known quantity and professionally maintained. After looking around at quite a few cars, he settled on this pretty example and we look forward to having him join our Club and seeing him at the races!

The SVRA US Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen is a mega-event that is unparalleled in both the number and variety of cars present. Many folks go just to take it all in in one of the most beautiful areas of the country at that particular time of year. The Fall foliage is just beginning to turn and the summer swelter is usually gone.

This year we have over a dozen cars coming, with a sizable contingent from Canada. Jim Hallman, a Formula Ford standout from Canada, Brad Baker and David Clubine are all going to be at the sharp end of the grid, but don’t count out the NAC-SRCC Champion David Sugg in his swift Swift! A few Historic cars will be present to liven up the mix as well as Mike Taradash from the West Coast and Jim Stengel in his beautiful Pratt & Miller.

Looks like Larry Rossi and Mike Crumay will be doing Tech Inspection duties at your paddock if you’re entered. Stay tuned and listen up for the party announcement at the event. Good luck to all!

Lots of good stuff going on in the Sports 2000 ranks as the major events on the schedule still attract strong turnouts and great racing for all of our Club members. The Spring started off a little more slowly, but as the weather warmed and the competition heated up, more and more people have joined our “band of brothers.”

The racing keeps getting better and betters, with nearly all participants able to find others to race with. The times are getting closer and closer together within the various “packs” within the field. At Mid-Ohio, we had SIX cars contesting third through ninth overall ALL within just a few tenths of a second! I used to get worried that there were so many folks over such a small increment, but my fears are unfounded as nearly everyone treats each other with respect, care and relative courtesy.

It seems like the “major event” schedule that the Board defined at the end of last year has served to channel entrants towards various race weekends, with good results. Other venues such as the Kohler International Challenge at Road America in July seem to attract substantial entrants, over a dozen at this year’s event. For the fall, SVRA Watkins Glen, SVRA New Jersey should get great turnouts! Various regional events like VSCDA’s ELVF at Elkhart Lake, the VRG Glen and SVRA Road Atlanta events in October will surely be supported by their local crowds. Remember, Savannah in December with VDCA is always a pleasant way to close out the year!

As we come to the end of what was an outstanding year for vintage Sports 2000 racing in general and NAC-SRCC in particular, on behalf of the Board of Directors of NAC- SRCC, let me thank all of our members who joined us at our events during the past year. Your companionship, participation and clean competition at our many events have made this a very special year for me and I am sure that I speak for everyone else. The car talk, determined but clean competition and good friendship make the long tows to the various venues all worthwhile. I look forward to seeing everyone again in 2009.

2008 was a wonderful year for our Sports 2s. While it was impossible to top the tremendous turnout at the 30th Reunion, the interest that was germinated by the 30th has carried on. Many more racers have been drawn to the cost effective performance of the Sports 2000. The market for these cars has grown whereby few well-maintained cars will remain without a new home for any length of time. Competitors from inside the racing world are being drawn to S2000 by that combination of performance and handling as well as the large fields of identical cars that come to our events. As we know it is much more fun to have a great dice with several equally matched cars than it is to drive alone in other classes where the performance differentials are greater. Outside of Formula Vee and
Formula Ford, S2000 is consistently the closest racing around and S2000s will outperform these cars by light years.

In reviewing the year 2008,1 am both pleased and surprised at the changes that took place. In the spring, the Historic class was expanded from 1982 to 1984 which brought more cars into a competitive position. This was a controversial decision but one that proved over the course of the season to work out well. The addition of the '83-'84 cars to the Historic Class did not change the competitive balance but gave several more drivers
the opportunity to compete for a points championship. During the summer, the NAC-SRCC class structure was expanded to create the "new" car class - SS2. Again, a controversial issue, and, in this case, the addition of the class will be proved over the next several years when more SS2 cars join us. The decision to put this issue to the members had been discussed by other Boards of Directors. The deciding factor was the acceptance of NAC-SRCC classes by the race sanctioning organizations. This acceptance occurred because of our members who supported the event and raced hard without incident. Thank you racers. Your attitude and support won over those people who had questions about letting our cars play with them.

Given the magnitude of the above changes and the turnout at all of NAC-SRCC events, let me thank the NAC-SRCC Board for 2008 [Dave Arundel, Walter Carson, Tom Kane and Larry Rossi ] These members worked extremely hard throughout the year to contact all members on all the above issues including the vote for the 2009 Board. As the result, we had over 80% of all members voting for the new car issue and the new Board. In addition, these individuals served as race chairmen many times during the year which included organizing the events and hosting the socials. They gladly gave their time and some of the contents of their pocketbooks to help all of us enjoy the weekend. I would also like to thank all of the other members who helped the race chairs and
contributed to our events. I have tried to specifically recognize each in my earlier letters. If I have missed anyone, please accept my apologies and my thanks for your support.

Peter Krause deserves special recognition. “Tigaman” constantly appears on the EZBoard drumming up support for each event, providing terrific descriptions of each days happenings, adding color commentary of each practice and race. In addition, as a member of the Technical Committee, Peter provided invaluable information and
background on the Historic car issue which helped the Board frame the issue to the members. Peter has been a cheerleader for Sports 2000 since the inception of the club and continues to tell race organizations and track owners what wonderful competitors we are and what a great show S2 drivers put on for the spectators. All organizations need individuals like Peter to grow and prosper. Thank you.

We have a great schedule for 2009 with two events in the first half of 2009 that deserve special mention. The first is on May 1-3, the 2009 Jefferson 500. Many of you should remember this event from prior years. Summit Point Motorsports Park will host the three-day vintage racing event, sanctioned by VRG. There will be a free track day, on Thursday, April 30th, which will be available to all event participants who submit their registration during the early bird registration period from January 1 through March 15, 2009. Additionally, all early bird registrants will have their names entered into a lottery to receive a refund of their registration fee for the event. I
have been told by the organizers that S2000 will get a race of its own if we can get over 20 cars entered. Summit Point is a great central location and we have had an outstanding time in the past.

The second is the SVRA Mid-Ohio event June 25-29. This will be another event similar to the 30th anniversary event in 2007. SVRA is giving the S2000s dedicated sessions and races for S2000s only in addition to the sessions with Group 7. We will be having special socials for S2000 drivers and crew. If your budget only permits a couple of races in 2009, please consider these two. They are most likely to be the best attended thus promising great racing for everyone with outstanding parties.

Two reminders - Please renew your membership for 2009. I am including a renewal form with this letter. Please return it while you have it in your frontal lobe. If you are like me, you will file it aside for later and then find it again in April/May when you start sending in race entries again - or lose it completely. Also I would implore you to print legibly. Over the last two years, I have made several errors entering information because I could not read your writing. I have old eyes - help me out. Thank you. Second, please try to remember to keep us updated when your email or phone number changes.

The website will be changed in 2009. As soon as possible after January 1, 2009, NAC-SRCC will move to a new website. The URL address will be the same http://www.nac-srcc.com This should give everyone more information in a more timely manner. There will be a forum for discussion pertinent to NAC-SRCC as well as S2000; the points championship will be updated more frequently; race information and reports should be fresher. After extensive study and discussion, the Board believes that the new website will provide a dynamic venue for our members. We will email everyone when the new site is up and running. Please visit the new site and give the Board your feedback as well as any ideas for additional content. We want to make it a place to visit that is useful as well as fun.

As my term draws to and end, I want to say how much I have enjoyed playing with my fellow competitors and meeting all your families and crew. When I go to a race I feel that I have an extended circle of friends with whom I can catch up and renew my friendship. More than just the on track time, the best part of each weekend for me is the social aspect of the sport. In addition, the opportunities to catch up with you guys during club business phone calls add another dimension to being a part of the club. I look forward to more of the same. Thank you.

Have a warm and wonderful Holiday Season. All the best for 2009.

Richard Barnes, Chairman, NAC-SRCC, December 2009

This weekend looks to be the best event so far this year. I will be surprised if there are any less than 25 cars. There should be great competition for everyone that comes to join us. Two sessions on Friday, three sessions plus an enduro on Saturday, and three sessions on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday each have S2000 only races. Doesn't get much better than that!

There will be the SRCC welcome party on Friday afternoon. We will announce the time and exact place on Friday at the Driver's meeting but plan on about 4:30 to 5:00 pm for the start time. If there are questions check in at the Barnes, Crumay, Rossi tents for information. The points championship winners will be announced and trophies awarded on Sunday at the Barnes, Crumay, Rossi tents during the 11 pm to noon lunch break. Please attend to honor the winners.

This writer went to the SVRA inaugural event at New Jersey Motorsports Park in August. Plenty of fun and good racing. This is excellent facility which is only going to get better. It is about an hour from Philadelphia - very easy drive. Your chairman was so enthused at finding himself on the podium, he forgot his bicycle that he rode to the award ceremony and left it at the track.

The motion to authorize the addition of newer cars as a separate class in 2009 and formation of a separate points championship for newer cars has been approved. At this time, the vote is 37 votes in favor and 11 not in favor. Only 10 members did not vote. Thank you to all the members who took the time to vote. We have only had 20 responses to our member survey. Please take the time to respond. I know these things are a pain but the information is very helpful to setting a schedule and emphasis races for 2009.

The word is spreading. At the SVRA race at Watkins Glen last weekend, there were 15 S2s. This gave everyone someone to play with and the participants had a great time. As a final note, please keep spreading the word about joining the SRCC members and the other S2s at the races. Our class is growing and the word is getting out. Tell the other S2 owners about us.
Our participation numbers ensure that everyone has several other cars to play with. We will try to do everything we can to help you have a good weekend. Join us.

Please check the EZ Board for news and announcements. Please note that SRCC tries to use email as a primary means of correspondence in order to save mailing costs. If this doesn't work for you please let me know and we will change it.

Sincerely, Richard Barnes, Chairman NAC-SRCC
