A Reminder From the NAC-SRCC Board

September 14, 2005

While we all appreciated the spectacular weather, great turnout and pleasant Friday night social hosted by NAC-SRCC member Simon Green at the SVRA Watkins Glen event, it is appropriate to remind all participants racing Sports 2000 cars that in this venue, specifically a vintage race weekend hosted by a vintage racing sanctioning body, car-to-car contact is not acceptable on-track behavior.

The NAC-SRCC can recommend to the sanctioning body to issue penalties from probation to excusing the “at-fault” driver(s) from the meeting. This mechanism has been used at Summit Point 2003, VIR 2003, VIR 2004, Savannah 2005 and Summit Point 2005 successfully.

During the weekend, there was a single car incident, an incident in the qualifying race where the second-place car spun in front of two others, causing damage to both of them, and several instances of car-to-car contact between most of the top SEVEN finishers of the Sunday feature race. This race was held late in the day and it was not possible to hold a drivers committee meeting among the participating NAC-SRCC member drivers.

Penalties cannot be applied retroactively without going through the entire “peer-review” drivers meeting that has been established as the NAC-SRCC mechanism to penalize car-to-car and car-to-object contact. Therefore the membership is reminded that contact, either car-to-car or single car is not permitted, condoned, desired or excused as “that’s racing.”

For more about this topic, please review this note that was provided to last year’s entrants to the 2004 VIR Sports 2000 Spectacular.

It is vitally important to keep the vintage and historic venues that we race with free of contact incidents. It is important to realize that we, as individual drivers, have personal responsibility in determining whether or not contact will occur and the overwhelming responsibility to AVOID CONTACT by “leaving racing room.” We must uphold the spirit of vintage racing.

We hope to see you at VIR, Mid-Ohio or wherever you may choose to exercise your historic Sports 2000 car.
