Round Twelve - SVRA Formula Car Festival and Season Finale at VIR
October 15-17, 2004

We had a great turnout of cars at VIR with 31 SRCC cars on the track. Paul Tavilla spent many hours on the phone prior to the event introducing new drivers to the SRCC series, and the work paid off, with eleven drivers making their first appearance in a SRCC event. Peter Harholdt, Scott Krueger, Larry Rossi, Stephen Steeb, Fred Knoll, Jon and Mike Neviaser, Martin Johns, Malcom Mangum, Andy Gilberg and Brian Elliott joined the SRCC regulars and a good time was had by all.

The track started out cold and damp for the Friday morning qualifying session, but became dry near the end of the session. Peter Harholdt was fastest S2A in the session. Jeff Wright set fast time in class S2, and Peter Krause was fastest in class HS2. The track was dry for the Friday afternoon session. Paul Tavilla set fast time for class S2A, John Gaither was fastest in S2, and Peter Krause set fast time in HS2.

The weather was perfect on Saturday, and Peter Harholdt was quickest in S2A, John Gaither in S2, and Peter Krause in HS2. The fastest times for all sessions was used to set the grid for the Saturday afternoon qualifying race. Roy Sokolowski was unable to start as he was repairing a broken rear half-shaft. Eddie Pendry was also unable to start, as were David Blum and Ceasar Cone. Top three finishers for S2A were Peter Harholdt, Fred Knoll and Paul Tavilla. Top three in S2 were John Gaither, Jeff Wright, and Dean Tank. Top three in HS2 were Peter Krause, Scott Livingston and David Hughes.

The weather continued perfect for Sunday, and the 1:00 PM SRCC Chanpionship race went off on time. Brian Elliott was unable to start having broken in the Saturday afternoon enduro race. Andy Gilberg had starter problems and was unable to push away. Paul Tavilla had shift linkage problems and also was unable to start. The rest of the cars started in good shape. Scott Livingston broke a brake rotor just past the mid-point of the race. Peter Krause lost his rear brakes during the race, but hung on for the class HS2 victory. John Gaither had a good battle with Jeff Wright, and won S2, with Jeff second. Peter Harholdt won class S2A.

We had a great series in 2004, with 31 member cars and 10 guest cars participating in the North America Chapter SRCC Championship series. It would be great to see over 50 Sports 2000 cars participate next season. The Board of Directors is currently working on the schedule for 2005. We'll post it on the web site as soon as the dates are firmed up. Stay tuned!

Rounds Nine and Ten - CFCR Formula Car Festival at BeaveRun, PA
August 21-22, 2004

We had a great turnout of cars at BeaveRun with 17 SRCC cars on the track. Jim Kelley (Tiga SC-85), Jim Shanel (Royale RP-38), David Blum (Swift DB-2), and Greg Robison (Apache 86S) made their SRCC debut. They were joined veterans Roy Sokolowski, John Galson, Peter Krause, Paul Tavilla, Randall Yow, Mike Crumay, Scott Livingston, David Calafato, Jeff Johnson, John Gaither, and Tom Ash.

Saturday Feature (SRCC Round Nine).
Jim Kelley and Peter Krause got the jump on Paul Tavilla and led the field away, right behind was an incredible battle headed by John Gaither and Lee Brahin. Peter led Jim for half the race with a couple car length cushion as they separated themselves from the rest of the field. That ended when Peter went off at the hairpin (Turn 10), running out of road and running over the nose of his car. Peter headed for the pits to repair his car, losing four of the twenty four laps completed by the leaders.

In the end, Kelley led from Tavilla and Gaither, Brahin never far behind. Shanel, McNamara, Yow, Sokolowski, Galson and Blum (starting in a spare car after a rotor hat bolt came out and locked the wheel while headed to the grid) were up next with Crumay, Charles Livingston (who lost two laps having spun and stalled) Tom Ash with David Calafato and Greg Robison retiring early.

Sunday Feature (SRCC Round Ten).
John Galson's Tiga was unfortunately a no-start due to cylinder head problems and Peter Krause had to replace a head gasket in his Lola prior to the start of the Sunday Feature Race.

John Gaither led the first lap of the Sunday feature, with Peter Krause and Paul Tavilla close behind. Krause and Tavilla managed to get by Gaither on lap 2 and then Charles Livingston passed Gaither to move into third. John Kelley had a tire going down and retired with a flat tire after lap 4. Jim Shanel retired with a bad wheel bearing after lap 5.

The track became slippery with oil around the midpoint. Tavilla, Livingston, Gaither, Sokolwski, and Blum moved around Krause. Charles Livingston then spun, loosing position back to Krause.

That left Tavilla alone up front to win with a 24 second margin of victory, with Gaither second and Blum third.

The series was to next move to the new circuit at Summit Point for the SVRA Blue Gray Races, but we've learned from SVRA that the new course will not be ready in time. That means the next event is the final event, the SVRA Season Finale at VIR. Paul Tavilla has clinched the 2004 S2 Championship and Peter Krause has clinched the 2004 HS2 Championship, so that means they can go fast at VIR without worring about points. Fast risers include John Gaither who has worked his way up to second in S2, Randall Yow who is in fifth place in S2, Mike Crumay, who shot up to eighth place is S2, and Charles Livingston who is in second place in HS2. Positions two through last in both classes can still change at VIR and we're hoping to have more than 20 cars out at VIR! Stay tuned!

Round Eight - VARAC Vintage Festival at Mosport, ON
June 25-27, 2004

We had a good turnout of cars at Mosport. Mike Crumay (Swift DB-2) and Cap Chenowith (Tiga SC-82) made their SRCC debut. They were joined by Peter Gates (Swift DB-2), Scott Livingston (March 81S), Roy Sokolowski (Chevron B63), John Galson (Tiga SC-85), David Calafato (March 83S), and Vaughn Rockney (Lola T492).

A steady rain began 20 minutes before the Saturday morning qualifying session and continued throught the session, ending about 20 minutes after the session. Cap Chenowith and David Calafato were the only SRCC cars choosing to go out in the rain.

Saturday afternoon's qualifying race saw a superb battle and a full field of Sports 2000 cars. Finishing 1st in S2 was Watkins Glen winner Peter Gates, turning a 1:32.7. Right behind Gates was Roy Sokolowski, with a 1:33.1. Another great battle was the third, with Scott Livingston's March edging Cap Chenoweth's Tiga by less than three and a half seconds after twelve laps, Livingston turning 1:35.1 with Chenoweth at 1:34.6. Galson and Calafato had a good run, John turning a 1:40.5 and finishing a little over seven seconds ahead of the DART Racing March, who turned a 1:41.0. Crumay's sanitary Swift did a 1:41.8 followed by Vaughn Rockney's T-492 at 149.0.

The weather was perfect for the Sunday Feature. Peter Gates in his Swift DB-2 had a good lead by lap 3 over Scott Livingston in his March 81S. Roy Sokolowski was running alone in third, with Cap Chenowith alone in fourth, followed by John Galson, David Calafato, Mike Crumay and Vaughn Rockney. As the race went on, Scott began closing the gap to Gates, and by lap 12, the two cars were nose to tail. Mike Crumay passed David Calafato near the mid-point of the race to take over 6th place. The race ended with Gates the winner in Class S2, with the HS2 winner Livingston right on his tail, followed by Sokolowski, Chenowith, Galson, Crumay, Calafato, and Rockney.

The series next moves to BeaveRun for the CFCR Formula Car Festival, August 21-22, 2004. With his second place finish at Mosport, Roy Sokolowski has moved up to second place in points in S2, bumping John Gaither. The double features at BeaveRun should draw a big field of cars, and the first battle of the northern cars vs. the southern cars!

Round Seven - SVRA Sprint Vintage GP at Mid-Ohio, OH
June 19-20, 2004

We had a good turnout of cars at Mid-Ohio. 2002 SRCC Champion Scott Livingston brought out his March 81S for his first race of the 2004 season. Jeff Johnson made his SRCC debut in his beautiful March 83S. Randall Yow, John Gaither and Brian Elliot all brought Swift DB2s, and Pete McNamara was running fast in his Lola T598.
Scott Livingston brought his superquick March 81S.

There was heavy rain overnight Thursday and the track was damp and slow for the single Friday qualifying session. John Gaither set fast time, followed closely by Scott Livingston, Brian Elliot, Pete McNamara, Randall Yow, and Jeff Johnson. Randall had twin problems of a bad miss and no tach. Jeff had some teething problems on the '83 March.

Jeff Johnson and Brian Elliott battle side-by-side on Friday.

The track was cold and slow on Saturday after more rain and cold weather. John Gaither set fast time in the morning qualifying session, followed by Randall Yow, Scott Livingston, Brian Elliott, Pete McNamara, and Jeff Johnson.

John Gaither and Randall Yow had a great battle during the Saturday morning qualifying.

All the cars were able to start the Saturday afternoon qualification race. John Gaither led the race from green to checker. Behind him, Randall, Brian, and Scott and a good battle for several laps until Brian was able to get by Randall. Randall slipped in the cold and damp turn one and got stuck in the grass. Brian's fire system went off quite unexpectedly on the last lap and he let Scott go by. Jeff Johnson had patched up his radiator piping and leaking water pump enough to start and was running well until his engine broke a rocker & he parked it on the back straight. The finishing order for the qualification race was John, Scott, Brian, Randall, Pete, and Jeff. Pete thought he might be out for the weekend due to an unrepairable header. Jeff was also out for the weekend with the broken rocker arm. Scott left for home to get ready for Mosport.

Jeff Johnson was out after the Saturday qualification race with a broken rocker arm.

The weather was still cool, but at least breezy and dry for the Sunday Feature. John Gaither again led wire-to-wire, but Randall Yow was closing fast at the end and Randall had the fastest lap time for the race. Pete McNamara managed to repair his header and start the race, but spun during the first lap and was out. Brian Elliott had trouble on the pace lap and was unable to start.

John Gaither was in Victory Lane following his first SRCC Feature Win!

Round Six - HSR Chemung Canal Watkins Glen Historic Races, NY
June 3-6, 2004

We had a good turnout of northern cars at Watkins Glen. 2001 Grand Champion Peter Gates brought out his Swift DB-2. Roy Sokolowski entered the superquick Chevron B-63 and David Calafato bought his March 83S. John Galson made his second appearance of the season with the Tiga SC-85. Bruce Parker was in the pits and announced that he was picking up his new Tiga the next weekend, so we hope to see him out soon.

It was cool and a bit damp on Friday, but the Friday practice sessions were without incident. David Califato was having some handling problems that he traced to a front anti-rollbar problem, and one that was fixed he was quickly up to speed.

Round Five - SVRA Johnson Controls GT at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI
May 14-16, 2004

John Galson (#72 Tiga SC-85) heads up a tight pack of SRCC cars at Road America, with Don Braaten (#89 Ocelot Mk8A), Pete McNamara (#17 Lola T-598), and Dean Tank (#75 Lola 86/90) on the chase.

We had a good turnout of northern and midwestern cars setting up a good north-south battle for later in the season. Veteran SRCC drivers Roy Sokolowski (Chevron B-63) and John Galson (Tiga SC-85) were out for their first event this year. Charles Livingston had a new paint job on the March 81S, and Bob Wismer returned to Road America with his superfast Lola. Dean Tank drove the Lola 86/90 that Alan Lewis drove to victory at the same race last year. Pete McNamara brought the beautiful Lola T-598, and Don Braaten had his Sebring winning Ocelot Mk8A running well.

There was heavy rain all day Friday. John Galson and Roy Sokolowski braved the weather to get some track time and to learn the turns. The rain ended by Saturday morning, but the track was still cold and fresh and everyone was pretty careful for the first session on Saturday. Don Braaten set fast time Saturday morning with the Ocelot. Next quick was Charles Livingston, then Steve Paoletti in his DB-2, Roy Sokolowski, John Galson, Pete NcNamara, Dean Tank, Scott Kennedy and Brian Elliot's Swift and Bob Wismer's Lola.

The track was dry and fast for the Saturday afternoon qualifying race. Charles Livingston's March 81S was first overall and first in HS2 with a 2:31.666, next was Roy Sokolowski in his Chevron doing a 2:40.664 and winning class S2. Local expert Don Braaten was third, followed by Tank, Galson, Paoletti, Wismer and McNamara.

Round Four - HSR Walter Mitty Challenge at Road Atlanta, Atlanta, GA
April 30 - May 2, 2004

We had a light turnout of SRCC cars at round four at Road Atlanta, with some guys laid up with car problems, others with schedule conflicts, and others recovering from surgeries. 2003 SRCC S2 Champion Paul Tavilla was there with the super-quick Swift DB-2, and it was great to see the beautiful yellow Lola T-596 of Michael Lynam out for its first SRCC event.

It rained Saturday morning as the SRCC cars were on the way to the grid for their morning qualifying session. Paul was going REAL slowly on his first lap and his car strangely slid off track. He made one more lap and noticed it was hard to drive in a straight line, and so returned to the paddock. The lower rear control arm bolt had broken and was only held by safety wire. Paul missed the qualifying race while the car was being repaired.

Michael Lynam didn't have much better luck. After running well earlier in the weekend, Michael suffered an electrical problem on the grid for the qualifying race as the weather continued damp.

Paul Tavilla was the only car to start the Sunday feature race and won with ease! Paul now has notched 7 career SRCC feature wins, the most of any driver, and appears to be on track for a perfect 60 point season. Here are the results from Atlanta:

Paul Tavilla (Swift DB-2 #9), Peter Krause (Tiga SC-82 #136) and Jeffrey Wright (Swift DB-2 #117) lead the pack into Turn One at Roebling Road. (Photo by R. Harrington)

We had a great turnout of SRCC cars at round three at Roebling Road with eleven cars on the track. Here are some photos of the stars!

Ceasar Cone with the superquick Swift DB-2. John Gaither set second fast time in the morning session with his Swift DB-2!
David Hughes was quick in his Tiga SC-80, until broken flywheel bolts ended his session early. The parts are on the way and David should be back in action Saturday afternoon! Peter Krause had fast time of the day driving the Cap Chenowith Tiga SC-82.
Bo Lemmon was quick in the Royale till a torn oil line sidelined him in the morning session. He plans to be running on Saturday after replacing the line William Rowell had fast times in both sessions and ran great!
Chris St. Martin turned quick times in the afternoon session in his Lola T594/598. Last year's S2 Champion Paul Tavilla set fast time in the afternoon session in his
Swift DB-2!
Tommy Thompson ran great in both sessions in the Tiga SC-84. Jeff Wright missed the morning session, but was quickly up to speed in the afternoon, setting 3rd fastest time of the day in his Swift DB-2!

Round Two - HSR Sebring Endurance Challenge, Sebring, Florida
March 5-7, 2004

We had a light turnout of SRCC cars at round two at Sebring. Peter Krause threw a water pump belt on the Tiga SC-80 during the second timed lap of the weekend on Friday and then the top end became noisy and he packed up and he went home Saturday. That left Paul Tavilla in his Swift DB-2 and Don Braaten in his Ocelot Mk8A as the only two SRCC cars left in the field. Both cars ran well all weekend with Paul and Don each getting class wins in the Sunday feature. These wins could easily become significant later in the season, when the points battle for the Championship heats up.

We had a good turnout at Kershaw for the opening round of the 2004 North America Chapter SRCC Chapionship. Roll call included John Gaither (Swift DB-2), Paul Tavilla (Swift DB-2), Ceasar Cone (Swift DB-2), Bo Lemmon (Royale S2000M), Chris St. Martin (Lola T-594/598), Tommy Thompson (Tiga SC-84) and Peter Krause (Tiga SC-82).

This event had a two day format and the weather Saturday was terrible all day. The temperature was in the low to mid 40's, with rain, heavy at times. Still, our intrepid band rocked and rolled. Our race group was all Sports 2000 cars and a lone Formula Ford.

The first session on Saturday was a little bit of a thrash, with everyone hurrying to get on rain tires.

At the top of the chart for the first session were newcomers Chris St. Martin and Tommy Thompson, 2:17.3 and 2:19.3, respectively. Unfortunately, the input shaft splines or clutch disc in Thompson's Tiga failed at the end of the session, and he was out for the weekend. Paul Tavilla, shaking down a new (for him) DB-2, was third at 2:22.3, Ceasar Cone was at 2:23.5, and Bo Lemmon turned a 2:38.6 (could be those vintage Goodyear wets?). Peter Krause didn't make it out for the first session and John Gaither was in the gravel trap early on.

The weather cleared somewhat for session two, and Peter Krause zoomed to the top of the chart in Cap Chenoweth's new "geriatric" Tiga at a 2:00.2, with St. Martin's Lola at 2:05.8, Tavilla at 2:11.7, Cone at 2:13.4, Gaither (before the battery died) 2:17.3, and Lemmon at 2:22.5.

Session three was right after lunch and there was TONS of standing water! Krause again turned fast time at 2:04.2, Tavilla at 2:16.8, Cone at 2:22.2, Gaither at 2:27.0, Tommy Thompson turned a cautious lap at 2:34.7 in the St. Martin Lola.

Three cars answered the bell for the Saturday afternoon qualifying race. Peter Krause was on the pole, followed by Tavilla and Gaither. Gaither called it a day early with a misfire after two laps while Krause and Tavilla splashed around for eight soggy laps.

The weather continued bad overnight, and it was damp for the Sunday morning warm-ups. There was more rain before the start of the feature race and a hard rain midway through. Peter Krause won the feature and was 1st in SRCC class HS2. Paul Tavilla was second and first in SRCC Class S2. Ceasar Cone and John Gaither had great drives and everyone finished on the same lap.

Peter Krause was first overall in the feature, and first in class HS2 with his new Tiga!

The next event is Round Two at the HSR Sebring Endurance Challenge in three weeks. Hopefully, the Florida weather will come out and it will be bright and sunny. Peter Krause leads the Championship in class HS2. Paul Tavilla continues where he left off last season leading the Championship in class S2. They really earned their points in the rain at Kershaw! Both of these guys may well end up leading all season. Stay tuned to find out!
