Barber Race Reports- By John GaitherFriday Rain, rain, a little sun, and more rain. Saturday Today was a lot more fun. Dry and fast. SundayWithout bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. I was running well and out front and bam - I snapped around like somebody put a hook on the back of that Swift. Incredible bummer - broken wheel bead. The car was great. Congrats to Larry Rossi for his first win in his first try. Deane Tank - our newest member ran very well and he and Larry had a close race. Maybe next time. --John - By Michael CrumayCar laps best time on Sunday: --Michael [Top] HSR Barber Motorsports Park Event PhotosPhotos courtesy of John Gaither - click to expand. Sebring Race Reports- By Vic Culbertson, Event Chair Well it could not have been a nicer weekend with postcard weather throughout the event. We were in the Group 6&7 Dash Race. Group 6 is ex GTP cars and group 7 is the Championship of Makes, Can-Am, WSC, and Sports 2000. Just about all of them can do 185MPH down the back straight. Hold your line, when they go by it's a rush!! We were under caution for the first 3, of 6, laps because the GTP boys would not play nice and line up in double rows for a proper start. All that money .... When we got the green I stayed on Lloyds tail till the hairpin where I overcooked it and had to bail down the runoff road. By the time I got back on track everyone was long gone. Had a nice duel with a GT40 who would blast down the straights and park in the middle of every corner. I had a good weekend, got some badly needed seat time and did not break anything. Sorry there were only 2 SRCC cars here, hope Doug West gets a motor going soon, but Lloyd and I carried the Banner proudly. --Vic - By Lloyd Sutherland Great weekend! Not enough cars. There were 4 S2's...3 SRCC members. Saturday qualifying race, Stephen Paoletti's car driven by someone else, took the win, I was 2nd, and Vick 3rd. This is after Doug's engine problem in qualifying. Too bad...very nice person and nice car. The 2.0 litre challenge race, I took the win (7th overall), Paoletti's car 2nd, and Vick 3rd. This was a great opportunity to drive with some 2.0 litre cars and chase the mighty chevrons...and there were quite a few chevrons. As the laps dwindled I was clicking of better lap times and getting closer to 2 Chevrons running almost the same times as I. All weekend I kept softening the rear to remove oversteer and raise the ride height to get over the bumps. Finally got it right on Sunday. Sunday's dash race....what a race that was. Paoletti's car (driven this time by Jordan who was there to drive a GTP car) and I were locked in a battle. I had him in the twisty section of the track but he had big power on the straight. Got my nose inside him several times but could not hold it on the turn exits. Finishing order, Jordan 1st (2:24.575), Lloyd 2nd (2:25.116), Vic 3rd (2:43.583). The HSR club should be happy with the show the SRCC cars put on. While wondering through the paddocks after the race, I got a lot of congratulations on the show the S2s put on! We are definitely thinking of Savannah in 5 weeks. If the SVRA do as nice a job as the HSR did this weekend, we will definitely be there. --Lloyd [Top] Round One - VDCA Season Opener at Carolina Motorsports Park, Kershaw, SC - February 26-27, 2005Here are the results for the first NAC-SRCC round at the VDCA event at Carolina Motorsports Park, followed by a report from John Gaither with some pictures of the SRCC gang.
CMP Race Report- By John Gaither, Event Chair The first round is in the books and it was a great beginning. We had a good turnout for this early date. I was there in a loaner Swift since my engine was damaged the previous weekend at the SCCA National at the same place. I was delighted to be able to participate and all the thanks for that go to Paul Tavilla. Peter Krause's K&E operation brought cars for Peter (his trusty Lola T-590), new members Scott Krueger (Swift DB-2), David Sugg, (Swift DB-2) and Philip Kelly (Lola T-594). Malcolm Mangum returned with his beautifully prepared Royale RP42, newcomer Mike Muckle presented his really neat Lola T-596. The lap times quickly showed how competitive this new season will be in the S2 class as Sugg, Krueger, and Mangum all got going quickly as the temps rose from their very chilly beginning. Some of us skipped the first 9:00 AM session just to let their engines, track and tires warm up a bit. Frost covered everything when we got there at 7 AM. Muckle was working his way through a few minor get-acquainted issues. Philip Kelly was getting used to everything - car, racing, track, you name it - and doing it quite well. The afternoon session on Saturday took most of us by surprise in that it turned out to be a 10 lap qualifying race instead of just a timed session. We were gridded by our previous times and right away the racing season began. Everybody got away cleanly. Scotty and I were held up a bit at first by a nice Group 5 Elva-Porsche with a lot of green flag speed, but not as much cornering ability. We eventually got by with Scott setting off in pursuit of the pack while I settled in for whatever I felt comfortable doing in my loaner. It had warmed up a lot by Saturday afternoon and 10 laps later we were all showing a bit of our winter largess (pant, pant). Tavilla came out on top followed by Krause, Sugg, Mangum, Krueger, Gaither, Kelly and Muckle. Krause got fastest lap and both he and Tavilla were very close! Philip ran the VDCA Gimmick race and did quite well after starting at the back of the grid. Gotta watch out for these young guns that are building stick time. On Saturday night, most of us caravanned to a nice dinner at Lucy's Fine Dining in downtown Camden. We were joined by the ladies, the crew, our buddy and frequent guest participant, Ceasar Cone and by Mike Krueger (Scott's Dad) who will be joining us by Summit Point or sooner in his own Tiga SC80. We ate, we drank, we told lies - a really nice way to get to know each other and start the season right. We hope to keep the social outings a regular thing. The 8:30 warm-up was a cold-up and most of us used the Enduro at 9:30 as a warm-up time. Good thing for me - I blew a gaping hole out of a header pipe. The track manager found me a welder just up the road who was actually available on a Sunday morning. Thirty minutes later and a whopping $20 poorer (of which $10 was my tip to him) I was back in business. Our race was at 12:30 - not a moment too soon. The skies were darkening, the winds picking up and the temps dropping. Shades of 2004? Fortunately, it stayed dry. At the green Scotty and I managed to bottle up the Elva just a hair. Somehow, I managed to get around Mangum and Peter spun on cold tires in the carousel - between Faith and Hope (really! - those are the turn's names). I was holding up Malcolm a bit, so I let him by in Turn One and he set off after the leaders like his life depended on it. He caught the lead pack of Tavilla, Sugg, Krueger, and they went at it clean but hard for the next eight laps. Peter recovered from his carousel ride and ran me down like a dog. He left me for dead and went after the leaders but ran out of laps. That was the order at the finish - and a close one it was - Tavilla, Sugg, Krueger, Mangum (fastest lap), Krause, Gaither and Kelly. This is going to be fun, folks. Hope to see you at an NAC-SRCC round real soon. John... VDCA Kershaw Event Photos[Top]
